About the club

Old Carey is a cross country club catering for all male and female athletes. Established in 1963 as a summer track club, the cross country club began in the 1960’s. Initially catering for past Carey Grammar students, it has since become an inclusive club welcoming athletes from all schools and clubs.

Old Carey competes in the Associated Public Schools Old Collegians Association. This 13 event, 10 club competition is held between April and September each year. Between 100 - 200 athletes compete for team points and individual trophies for men and women, both fastest times and handicaps. Distances range from 5km - 16km including three relays.

Events cater for all ages and standards. Athletes can compete both in the Athletics Victoria (AV) cross country season as well as the APSOC season, as the two associations run events on alternate Saturdays. The APSOC competition is renowned for its informality, friendliness and big afternoon teas held at the conclusion of each race.

McPhail 8km @ Yarra Bend

A small but enthusiastic group of 90 athletes attended this race at Yarra Bend on Sat morning. With the mercury at 7 degrees, conditions were a little "crispy" but still dry and good for running on a firm track. Fastest time for the race was invitation runner Kane Wille who scooted around the 8k course in 25:05.96, one full minute ahead of second place getter Stephen Paine of Old Melburnians. OC had 12 athletes compete with 5 finishing in the top 20. A pretty solid effort. Chris Papadakis was our best in 6th closely followed by Steve Griffin in 8th. Good times were also recorded by Justin Noonan, Andrew Edwards and Andrew Beath who all finished in the top 20. Also good runs from Matt Poulton, Jeff Sharam and Peter Pang. Erin Carter was our best placed woman in 37 spot overall followed by Lucy Carruthers, Kari Entwisle and Norma Gonzalez. Welcome back to Justin Noonan husband of Norma who attended for his first OC run for several years and also a warm welcome to Lucy Carruthers for her first run. Both Justin and Lucy have some good marathon times on the board, with Lucy recently completing the Boston Marathon, the holy grail of all marathoners.
